Most "best gold token" lists rank on market cap and stop there. Size matters, but it does not tell you whether a token holds its value against the gold behind it, whether a regulator watches the issuer, or whether you can ever turn it into metal. This ranking scores four gold-backed tokens on those questions. For the two largest, it also uses something other lists do not have: **StackFi's own daily measurement of what each token costs against spot gold**.

If you have not yet decided between tokenized gold, a gold ETF and physical bars, start with the [physical vs ETF vs tokenized gold comparison](/comparison/physical-gold-vs-gold-etf-vs-tokenized-gold/). This page assumes you have already picked the on-chain route.

## How we ranked them

Each token is scored on six things, in this order of weight:

1. **Backing and proof.** What each token is a claim on, and how often an independent firm checks it.
2. **Regulation.** Who supervises the issuer, and under which law.
3. **Tracking.** How far the token's market price drifts from spot gold. For XAUT and PAXG this is measured, not estimated (see the data block above).
4. **Redemption.** Whether you can take delivery of metal, the minimum, and the fee.
5. **Size and liquidity.** Market cap and how easily you can exit.
6. **Rails.** Which blockchains it runs on, and so which wallets and venues can hold it.

## The ranking at a glance

| Rank | Token | Unit per token | Issuer and oversight | Proof of reserves | Physical redemption | Market cap* |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | **PAXG** (Pax Gold) | 1 fine troy oz | Paxos Trust Company, NYDFS-regulated | Monthly attestation, bar lookup | Whole LGD bars (~430 oz) | ~$1.7B |
| 2 | **XAUT** (Tether Gold) | 1 fine troy oz | TG Commodities (Tether group) | Quarterly attestation | Whole LGD bars (~430 oz), Switzerland, 0.25% fee | ~$3.1B |
| 3 | **KAU** (Kinesis Gold) | 1 gram | Kinesis | Periodic audits; scope has been questioned | Via Kinesis; sources disagree on the fee | Far smaller |
| 4 | **XAUm** (Matrixdock Gold) | 1 fine troy oz | Matrixdock (Matrixport group) | Biannual audit plus monthly reserve statements | 1 kg bars (32.148 XAUm) | Far smaller |

*XAUT and PAXG market caps from CoinGecko via StackFi's price feed, as of November 1, 2026. KAU and XAUm caps vary widely between data providers, so check CoinGecko or RWA.xyz for a live figure rather than relying on a number here.

## How closely each token tracks gold (measured)

This is the part other lists skip. Several times a day StackFi prices XAUT and PAXG on CoinGecko against spot gold read in the same run, and keeps the median, low and high for every day. From September 24 to November 1, 2026 (39 days):

| Token | Typical daily premium to spot | Days below spot | Widest discount | Widest premium |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| XAUT | −0.09% | 32 of 39 | −1.05% | +0.34% |
| PAXG | +0.09% | 17 of 39 | −1.08% | +0.55% |

Two readings matter for a buyer. First, both tokens track gold within about a tenth of a percent on a typical day, which is smaller than most exchange spreads, so the premium rarely decides which to buy. Second, both have had days a full percent away from spot. If you buy or sell in size, check the live premium before you trade, not after. The full daily series and a free CSV are on the [XAUT and PAXG premium history](/tools/xaut-paxg-premium-history/) page.

We do not yet measure KAU or XAUm, so they get no tracking score here.

## 1. PAXG: the best default

PAXG is issued by Paxos Trust Company, which holds a New York limited-purpose trust charter and is supervised by the New York State Department of Financial Services. Each token is a claim on one fine troy ounce held on allocated London Good Delivery (LGD) bars. Paxos publishes monthly attestations from an independent accounting firm and lets holders look up the bars behind their tokens.

It ranks first because it is the strongest on the two questions that are hardest to fix later: who regulates the issuer, and how often someone outside checks the gold. The trade-off is that redemption, like XAUT's, is in whole LGD bars of about 430 ounces, so for most holders "redeemable" means selling the token, not taking delivery.

**Best for:** buyers who want the most conventional regulatory setup in tokenized gold.

## 2. XAUT: the largest, and the one most often slightly below spot

XAUT is issued by TG Commodities in the Tether group. Each token is a claim on one fine troy ounce on an allocated LGD bar in a Swiss vault, and quarterly attestations report ounces held against tokens issued. At about $3.1 billion it is the largest gold token by market cap.

Our data adds one practical detail: XAUT traded below spot on 32 of the 39 days measured. For a buyer, a token that tends to sit slightly under spot is a small advantage on entry and a small cost on exit. Redemption runs through a verified TG Commodities account, in whole bars of about 430 ounces delivered in Switzerland, with a 0.25% fee. Buying directly from Tether needs at least 50 XAUT. Our [XAUT review](/tokenized/tether-gold-xaut-review/) covers the reserve reports and contract controls in detail.

**Best for:** holders who want the deepest market and are comfortable with quarterly rather than monthly attestation.

For a side-by-side of these two alone, see [PAXG vs XAUT](/rwa/tokenized-gold-paxg-vs-xaut/).

## 3. KAU: gram-sized gold with a fee-share yield

KAU, from Kinesis, is denominated in grams rather than ounces, so one token is a small amount of gold. Kinesis says each KAU is backed by allocated gold held with its vaulting partner, and it pays holders a share of platform transaction fees as a yield in metal. That makes KAU one of the few gold tokens that pays anything for holding it.

The caveats are real. The main KAU token lives on Kinesis's own blockchain rather than Ethereum, which limits where you can hold and trade it. A 2023 review of a Kinesis audit questioned its scope, and published redemption fees differ between data providers (0.45% on DefiLlama, 2.5% on RWA.xyz). Read the current fee schedule and latest audit on Kinesis's own site before buying.

**Best for:** small, regular gold savings inside the Kinesis app, if you accept a single-platform setup.

## 4. XAUm: kilo-bar redemption in Asia

XAUm, from Matrixdock, is a claim on one fine troy ounce held in vaults in Hong Kong and Singapore. Its stand-out feature is a lower physical redemption minimum than PAXG or XAUT: one 1 kg bar, which is 32.148 XAUm, instead of a 430-ounce LGD bar. Matrixdock describes biannual independent audits with monthly reserve statements in between.

It ranks last on size and on evidence: most detailed public material on XAUm comes from Matrixdock or its partners, and its market cap is a small fraction of the two leaders, so exits are thinner.

**Best for:** holders in Asia who may actually want a kilo bar.

## Which one should you buy?

- **You want the cleanest regulatory setup:** PAXG.
- **You want the biggest market and often a slight discount to spot:** XAUT.
- **You save small amounts and want a yield:** KAU, after checking its fees and audit.
- **You may redeem for a kilo bar in Asia:** XAUm.
- **You might be better off without any of them:** read [who should not buy tokenized gold](/tokenized/who-should-not-buy-tokenized-gold/) and [the risks of tokenized gold](/tokenized/tokenized-gold-risks/).

Whichever you choose, the token is only half the decision. Where you hold it, in your own wallet or on an exchange, decides who can freeze or lose it.

## FAQ

### What is the best gold-backed token?

For most buyers, PAXG: it has a New York-regulated issuer, monthly attestations and a bar lookup. XAUT is larger and, in StackFi's daily data, usually traded slightly below spot.

### Do gold-backed tokens track the gold price?

The two largest do, closely. From September 24 to November 1, 2026, XAUT's typical daily premium to spot was −0.09% and PAXG's was +0.09%, though both had single days about 1% away from spot.

### Can I redeem a gold token for physical gold?

Yes, but usually only in large amounts. PAXG and XAUT redeem in whole London Good Delivery bars of about 430 ounces; XAUm redeems in 1 kg bars. Most holders exit by selling the token.

### Which gold token pays interest?

None pays interest in the usual sense. KAU pays holders a share of Kinesis platform fees, and some platforms offer separate rewards on XAUT or PAXG, which carry the platform's own risk.
