**Short answer:** by Tether's own reports, yes. Each XAUT is a claim on one fine troy ounce of gold on an allocated London Good Delivery bar in a Swiss vault, and the quarterly attestations show ounces held matching tokens issued. What they cannot show is that every layer around the gold is safe. You are trusting Tether as the issuer, the vault operator, the accountant and the contract owner at the same time.

This review sets out what the evidence says, what it leaves out, and who XAUT suits. If you have already decided to buy, the [step-by-step XAUT buying guide](/tokenized/how-to-buy-xaut/) covers routes and costs.

## What the reserve reports show

Tether publishes a quarterly attestation for XAUT. The two most widely reported data points:

| Report date | Gold held (fine troy oz) | Approx. tonnes | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| 31 March 2025 | 246,523 | 7.7 | [The Block](https://www.theblock.co/post/352196/tethers-gold-backed-xaut-stablecoin-holds-7-7-tons-of-reserves-after-first-quarter) |
| 30 June 2026 | 707,747 | 22.0 | Tether Q2 2026 attestation, reported by [KuCoin News](https://www.kucoin.com/news/flash/tether-gold-holdings-rise-9-5-in-q2-despite-14-1-price-drop) |

In fifteen months the gold behind XAUT almost tripled. At the end of June 2026 the reserve was worth $2.84 billion.

One detail is easy to miss. Of the 707,747 tokens issued at 30 June 2026, 612,824 were in customer hands. The other 94,923 were issued but still held by Tether, ready to sell. Every issued token is counted against gold in the vault, so the backing covers both. When you read "supply" figures on data sites, check which of the two numbers they mean.

## Who checks the gold, and what that proves

The quarterly reports are **attestations** by an independent accounting firm, BDO Italia, which also attests Tether's USDT reserves. An attestation confirms that on one date the gold listed in the vault records matched the tokens outstanding. It is narrower than a full audit: it does not test Tether's controls over a whole period, and it is a snapshot that can be outdated the day after.

Tether also offers a bar lookup, so a holder can see which bars, by serial number and refiner, sit behind their tokens. That is better transparency than most gold products offer, and it is still information supplied by the issuer.

## What the contract lets Tether do

The XAUT contract on Ethereum is upgradeable. A review published in Aave's governance forum when Aave considered listing XAUt describes it this way:

- The token sits behind an upgradeable proxy controlled by a **Tether multisig**, with **no timelock**, so the contract logic can change at once.
- The same owner can **block an address, destroy the tokens held there, and unblock it**.
- At the time of that review there was **no public audit and no bug bounty**. A transfer flaw reported by a security firm was patched in an upgrade on 25 May 2023.

Freeze powers like these are normal for regulated stablecoins and are used against stolen funds and sanctioned addresses. They also mean your tokens are only as safe as Tether's judgment and its keys.

## Redemption: possible, but only in bars

You can turn XAUT into metal, but only through TG Commodities, with a verified account, in Switzerland:

- Physical delivery works in whole bars, roughly 430 ounces, about $1.8 million at October 2026 prices.
- Redemption carries a 0.25% fee, and the bars must go to an address in Switzerland.
- Buying directly from Tether needs at least 50 XAUT and also costs 0.25%.

For almost every holder, the real exit is selling the token for USDT or cash. That makes **market liquidity** the redemption path that matters: check the order book or pool depth for your size before you buy.

## Fees

Tether charges no storage or management fee on XAUT, and the contract takes no fee on transfers. Your costs are those of the route you use: trading fees, spread, gas and withdrawal fees. Gold ETFs charge an expense ratio every year. A tokenized product with no storage fee can come out cheaper the longer you hold; the [holding cost calculator](/tools/gold-holding-cost-calculator/) runs the numbers.

## XAUT vs PAXG

| | XAUT | PAXG |
|---|---|---|
| Issuer | TG Commodities (BVI) | Paxos Trust Company (New York, NYDFS-regulated) |
| Vault | Switzerland | London (Brink's) |
| Reserve reporting | Quarterly attestation | Monthly attestation |
| Storage fee | None | None |
| Market value, 4 Oct 2026 | $3.35 billion | $1.80 billion |
| Networks | Ethereum (original); others per Tether's list | Ethereum, Solana |

PAXG has the stronger regulator and more frequent reports. XAUT is the larger of the two by market value and charges nothing for storage either. The full comparison is in [PAXG vs XAUT](/rwa/tokenized-gold-paxg-vs-xaut/).

## Verdict: who XAUT suits

**XAUT suits you if** you already hold USDT or other crypto, want gold you can move and sell around the clock, and accept Tether as a counterparty. It is the largest tokenized gold by market value and costs nothing to store.

**Look elsewhere if** you want a US-regulated issuer, need to redeem small amounts of metal, or do not want a single company controlling the token contract. ## Frequently Asked Questions

### Is XAUT backed by real gold?

According to Tether's quarterly attestations, yes: at 30 June 2026 it reported 707,747 fine troy ounces in Swiss vaults against 707,747 tokens issued. The attestations are snapshots by an independent accountant, not continuous audits.

### Who audits Tether Gold?

The reserve reports are attestations by BDO Italia, the firm that also attests Tether's USDT reserves. An attestation checks holdings on one date. It is not a full financial audit.

### Can Tether freeze my XAUT?

Yes. The contract owner, a Tether multisig, can block an address and destroy the tokens held there, and can upgrade the contract without a timelock.

### Can I redeem XAUT for physical gold?

Only in whole bars of about 430 ounces, through a verified account with TG Commodities, delivered in Switzerland, with a 0.25% fee. Smaller holders sell the token instead.

### Is XAUT better than PAXG?

Neither is better for everyone. XAUT is larger by market value; PAXG is regulated in New York and reports monthly. Choose by which issuer you would rather trust.

### Does XAUT have fees?

No storage or transfer fee from Tether. You pay the trading fees, spread and gas of the route you use to buy, move or sell it.
