Then look for what follows it: GF, GP, HGE, RGP or a fraction like 1/20 mean gold-filled or gold-plated — a thin layer over base metal, worth a small fraction of the solid price. A buyer will test the piece rather than trust the stamp, and that test is what the offer is based on.
