Should You Buy Physical Gold Instead of PAXG or XAUT?

Tokens cost about 0.2–1.2% to buy and sell; 1 oz bars about 3–5%. When physical gold is still the better choice for a crypto holder, and when it is not.

Short answer: buy physical gold instead of PAXG or XAUT if your reason for owning gold is to hold something that does not depend on any company, exchange or blockchain, you plan to keep it for years, and you have somewhere safe to store it. Stay with the tokens if you will move in and out of gold, hold less than an ounce or two, or want to sell at any hour. On cost the tokens win clearly; on independence the metal wins just as clearly. For many crypto holders the answer is both, in different amounts.

This page puts numbers on that trade-off, using dealer prices from October 2026, the issuers’ published fees and StackFi’s own record of where the tokens trade against spot.

What each route costs

Buying and selling gold costs a few percent in physical form and a fraction of a percent as a token. Here is where the money goes.

Physical gold (1 oz bars and coins):

  • Large US online dealers sold 1 oz bars at roughly 2–4% over spot in October 2026; coins such as the American Eagle cost a point or two more.
  • Dealers buy recognised 1 oz bars back at or a little below spot, so a round trip costs roughly 3–5%.
  • Paying by card usually adds 3–4%; bank transfer is the cheap way to pay.
  • Storage: a home safe is a one-off cost, a bank safe-deposit box runs about $50–$200 a year, and an insured professional vault about 0.1–0.5% of value a year.

PAXG and XAUT:

  • No storage fee. Tether charges none on XAUT, and Paxos’s fee page (updated 13 August 2026) says it charges no gold storage fee on PAXG “at this time”.
  • Exchange trading fees, each way: 0.10% at Binance’s base spot rate, up to 0.60% at Coinbase Advanced’s entry-tier taker rate.
  • The price you get against spot: from 24 September to 13 October 2026, StackFi’s daily snapshots put XAUT’s median premium at −0.03% and PAXG’s at +0.09%. The worst reading was on 25 September, when both traded about 1% below spot for part of the day.
  • Moving tokens to your own wallet costs a network fee, which varies with the blockchain and how busy it is.
  • Buying from or redeeming with the issuer is a different, institutional route: Tether requires at least 50 XAUT and charges 0.25%; Paxos’s redemption fee starts at 0.125% from September 2026. Most people buy and sell on an exchange instead.

For $10,000 of gold held for five years, leaving aside the gold price itself:

RouteBuy and sellStorage, 5 yearsTotal
1 oz bars, home safe$300–$500Cost of the safe$300–$500 plus the safe
1 oz bars, bank box$300–$500$250–$1,000$550–$1,500
1 oz bars, insured vault$300–$500$50–$250$350–$750
PAXG or XAUT, bought and sold on an exchange$20–$120None$20–$120, plus any network fees

Small amounts tilt the comparison further. At about $4,190 an ounce in October 2026, anything under one ounce means gram bars or fractional coins, which dealers sell at 5–10% over spot. A $1,000 purchase loses roughly $50–$90 to the premium on the way in; the same amount in XAUT or PAXG costs $1–$6 in trading fees.

What each route protects you from

Cost is not the reason people buy gold. Most buy it to hold something that survives when other things fail, and here the comparison turns around:

Two rows deserve a closer look. Both token contracts let the issuer freeze addresses, and XAUT’s contract can be upgraded without a timelock. Regulators can also reach an issuer: in 2023 New York ordered Paxos to stop issuing the BUSD stablecoin. Neither has happened to a gold token, but both are possible in a way they are not for a coin in your safe. In the other direction, a safe at home is a target in a way a wallet is not, and many home insurance policies cover only a few thousand dollars of bullion unless you add a rider.

Can you turn PAXG or XAUT into physical gold later?

Not in useful amounts. Both issuers deliver only whole London Good Delivery bars of about 430 ounces, worth about $1.8 million at October 2026 prices. XAUT delivers only in Switzerland, through a verified account. Below that size, the only way from a token to metal is to sell the token and buy coins or bars from a dealer, paying the dealer’s premium on the way. If you are sure you will want metal eventually, buying the metal now is cheaper than buying a token and converting later.

When physical gold is the better choice

  • Gold is your insurance against the crypto system itself. If the scenario you are protecting against includes exchanges failing or stablecoins breaking, the gold should not sit on the same rails.
  • You will hold it for five years or more. A 3–5% round trip spread over years is a small annual cost; over months it is a large one.
  • You are buying at least an ounce at a time. Above one ounce, bars carry 2–4% premiums; below it, 5–10%.
  • You have safe storage you trust, at home or in a vault in your own name.

When PAXG or XAUT is the better choice

  • You rebalance between crypto and gold. Moving between bitcoin and a gold token takes minutes, at any hour; doing the same with bars takes days and costs several percent each time. How large that rebalancing slice should be is covered in how much gold crypto investors should own.
  • You are starting small. Under an ounce or two, token fees are a fraction of dealer premiums.
  • You may need to sell quickly, or move the holding across borders.
  • You want the gold to earn something while you hold it. Bars earn nothing. Until 19 November 2026, TopNod’s XAUT Hold-to-Earn campaign pays up to 20% APY in USDT on up to $10,000 of XAUT held in a TopNod wallet (not available in the US or Singapore). It is a short promotion, not a permanent yield.

The split most crypto holders end up with

The two routes are not exclusive, and they do different jobs. A common arrangement is a core of coins or bars sized for the long term, held outside crypto entirely, and a smaller tokenized slice for rebalancing and quick access, ideally in a wallet you control rather than on an exchange. That way a failure at the exchange, the issuer or your safe hits only part of your gold, not all of it. If you hold PAXG or XAUT, read tokenized gold risks before you size that slice, and if you are buying metal for the first time, how to buy gold bars covers dealers, premiums and storage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is physical gold safer than PAXG or XAUT?

Safer against different things. Coins and bars in your possession survive an exchange collapse, an issuer freeze and a lost seed phrase; a token survives none of those on its own. A token, in turn, cannot be stolen from your home or lost in a fire. If your worry is the financial and crypto system, metal is safer; if it is theft or the need to sell quickly, a self-custodied token can be.

Is PAXG or XAUT cheaper than buying gold bars?

Yes, by a wide margin. A round trip in 1 oz bars costs roughly 3–5%, plus storage; a round trip in PAXG or XAUT costs about 0.2–1.2% in exchange fees, with no storage fee. The gap widens below one ounce, where dealers charge 5–10% over spot.

Can I redeem PAXG or XAUT for gold coins?

No. Both issuers deliver only whole London Good Delivery bars of about 430 ounces. To get coins, sell the token and buy coins from a dealer.

Should I sell my PAXG or XAUT and buy physical gold?

Only for the part of your gold you intend to hold for years and want outside crypto. Selling tokens and buying bars costs the exchange fee plus a 2–4% dealer premium, so it makes sense once, for a long-term core, not as something to switch back and forth.

How much of my gold should be physical?

There is no fixed rule. Many crypto holders keep the long-term core of their gold, the part meant to survive a crypto crisis, in coins or bars, and hold a smaller slice as tokens for rebalancing and quick sales. The size of each depends on how often you trade and how much storage you trust.
