XAUT is Tether Gold, a token issued by TG Commodities Limited in the Tether group. Each token is a claim on one fine troy ounce of gold held on allocated London Good Delivery bars in Switzerland. It trades within a few hundredths of a percent of spot gold: on 4 October 2026 one XAUT sold for $4,141.48 against a spot price of $4,141.80. The live gap is on our XAUT price tracker.
You do not need a whole token. XAUT is divisible, so $50 of USDT buys about 0.012 XAUT. This guide covers the three practical ways to make that swap, what to check before you press confirm, and what each route costs.
If you are still deciding whether to own gold as a token at all, start with physical gold vs gold ETF vs tokenized gold. If your question is whether XAUT is safe, read our Tether Gold review first.
Check these three things before you buy
1. The contract. The original XAUT token lives on Ethereum at 0x68749665FF8D2d112Fa859AA293F07A622782F38 (Etherscan). Copycat tokens with the same name exist. Before you swap on a DEX or add the token to a wallet by hand, compare the address character by character against Tether’s own list at gold.tether.to.
2. The network. Tether lists the networks it supports on its supported-protocols page. Ethereum is the original and has the deepest liquidity. You will also see XAUt0, a bridged version used on some other chains. It is a different token with an extra bridge layer, so do not treat it as interchangeable with Ethereum XAUT. An exchange that “supports XAUT” may support it on only one network; check the deposit and withdrawal network before you move anything.
3. The full cost. The price of XAUT is close to spot, but you also pay a trading fee or swap fee, the spread, slippage, network gas, and possibly a withdrawal fee. On Ethereum, gas is a fixed cost per transaction, so it weighs heavily on small orders. A $5 gas fee is 0.05% of a $10,000 order and 10% of a $50 one.
The three ways to buy XAUT with USDT
| Route | How it works | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Centralized exchange | Deposit USDT, buy XAUT/USDT on the order book, withdraw to your wallet | Larger orders that need the tightest spread | Account checks, withdrawal fee, and until you withdraw the exchange holds your gold |
| DEX swap on Ethereum | Connect a self-custody wallet and swap USDT for XAUT in a pool or through an aggregator | People already active on Ethereum | Gas, slippage on thin pools, and fake tokens with the same name |
| Swap inside a wallet | The wallet routes the swap for you and the XAUT lands in the same wallet | Beginners who want one app and no exchange account | The wallet’s quote includes its own fee; compare it with the exchange price |
Route 1: buy on an exchange, then withdraw
- Open an account at an exchange that lists XAUT and complete its identity checks. Bitfinex and Kraken both list it; availability varies by country.
- Deposit USDT. Use the network the exchange shows on its deposit page. Sending on the wrong network is the most common way to lose funds.
- Buy on the XAUT/USDT market. A limit order lets you control the price; a market order fills at once but can cross a wide spread.
- Withdraw the XAUT to a wallet you control, on Ethereum, and keep the withdrawal fee in mind.
This route usually gives the best price on large orders. Its weakness is custody: while the XAUT sits on the exchange, you are trusting the exchange as well as Tether.
Route 2: swap on a DEX
- Hold USDT and a little ETH for gas in a self-custody Ethereum wallet.
- Open a DEX or a DEX aggregator and select USDT as the token to sell.
- For the token to buy, paste the XAUT contract address above instead of searching by name.
- Check the quoted rate against the spot price on our XAUT tracker. Set a slippage limit you can live with, review the gas estimate and confirm.
An aggregator splits your order across pools to find a better rate, which helps on orders of a few thousand dollars or more.
Route 3: swap inside a wallet
Several wallets now offer a built-in swap. You choose USDT, choose XAUT, see a quote and confirm; the token arrives in the same wallet. This is the shortest path for a first purchase. The wallet’s fee is built into the quote, so compare the effective price per ounce with the exchange price before larger orders.
TopNod, a self-custody wallet, is one of these. If you buy XAUT there and keep it on Ethereum, you can also take part in its XAUT Hold-to-Earn rounds, which pay a reward in USDT for holding. The guide has the current round’s dates, rates and limits.
Can you buy directly from Tether?
Yes, but it is built for institutions. Buying straight from TG Commodities requires a verified account (KYC), a minimum of 50 XAUT, which is about $207,000 at October 2026 prices, and a 0.25% fee on top of the gold’s market price. Physical redemption has the same 0.25% fee, delivers only to an address in Switzerland, and works in whole bars of around 430 ounces. Everyone else buys and sells on the secondary market.
What a purchase costs
Gold price aside, a typical buy has these costs:
- Premium to spot. Usually tiny for XAUT; on 4 October 2026 the token traded 0.01% below spot. Check it at the moment you buy.
- Trading or swap fee. Set by the exchange, DEX pool or wallet.
- Spread and slippage. Small on liquid order books, larger on thin pools or big market orders.
- Gas. Paid in ETH on Ethereum, the same whatever the order size.
- Withdrawal fee. If you buy on an exchange and move the tokens to your wallet.
Tether charges no storage fee on XAUT, so holding costs nothing beyond the gas to move it. To compare a token with bars and an ETF over time, use the gold holding cost calculator.
After you buy
- Confirm the balance on-chain. Look up your address on Etherscan and check that the token contract matches.
- Add the token to your wallet view with the official contract address if it does not appear on its own.
- Back up the wallet with its recovery method before you hold any real amount.
- Keep a record of the date, price and fees for tax purposes.
How to sell XAUT
Reverse the route. Swap XAUT for USDT in your wallet or on a DEX, or deposit it to an exchange and sell on the XAUT/USDT market. Selling is how almost every holder exits; physical redemption is only practical for whole bars.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I buy XAUT with USDT?
Yes. USDT is the most common way to pay for XAUT: exchanges list an XAUT/USDT market, DEX pools pair the two on Ethereum, and wallet swaps accept USDT directly.
What is the minimum amount of XAUT I can buy?
On the secondary market there is no practical minimum because the token is divisible. On Ethereum, gas makes very small purchases poor value. Buying directly from Tether requires at least 50 XAUT.
Which network should I buy XAUT on?
Ethereum, unless you have a specific reason to use another network. It holds the original token and the most liquidity, and it is the network TopNod’s Hold-to-Earn uses. Confirm any other network on Tether’s supported-protocols page.
How do I know I bought the real XAUT?
Check the token contract on Etherscan. On Ethereum it must be 0x68749665FF8D2d112Fa859AA293F07A622782F38. A token with the right name but a different address is not Tether Gold.
Does XAUT pay interest?
No. Tether pays holders nothing, and the token has no native staking. Any yield comes from a third party paying you to hold or lend it; see does gold pay interest for the options and their risks.
Is XAUT backed by real gold?
Tether reports that it is, through quarterly attestations by an independent accountant, and it offers a lookup of the bars behind the tokens. What those reports do and do not prove is covered in our Tether Gold review.
