Seven eras of the gold price

1960–1971: fixed at $35

Under Bretton Woods the dollar was tied to gold at $35 an ounce, so the price barely moved: $35.27 in January 1960, $40.9 on average in 1971. In August 1971 the US stopped converting dollars into gold, and the price was left to the market.

1971–1980: the first bull market

Oil shocks and high inflation carried gold to a monthly average of $675 in January 1980, more than ten times its 1971 level. Measured by monthly averages, that peak stood for 27 years, until April 2007.

1980–2001: two decades down

Steep US interest rates broke inflation and gold lost its appeal. The price drifted lower for twenty years, to $256 in July 1999, the lowest month since 1980.

2001–2011: the second bull market

The dot-com bust, the 2008 financial crisis and the money printing that followed took gold from a $271 average in 2001 to $1,772 in September 2011.

2011–2015: the pullback

With the US recovering and rate rises expected, gold fell back to $1,076 in December 2015, about 40% below its 2011 high.

2016–2024: the slow climb

The pandemic lifted the monthly average to $1,969 in August 2020; from 2022 central banks bought gold at a record pace, and 2024 averaged $2,388.

2025–2026: record, then retreat

Gold averaged $3,442 in 2025 and $5,020 in February 2026, the highest month in the series; the intraday record came at the end of January, around $5,590–5,600. It has fallen back since, to a $4,319 average in September 2026. What the September 2026 Fed rate rise did to the outlook is on the forecast page.

After its intraday record at the end of January 2026 gold fell back, to a $4,319 average in September 2026.
