Gold price on the weekend
Spot gold closes at 17:00 New York time on Friday and reopens at 18:00 on Sunday. For those 49 hours most price boards show Friday's close. Two gold markets keep trading: tokenized gold — XAUT and PAXG, each one troy ounce of vaulted gold — and, since July 2026, CME's 1-Ounce Gold futures. This page shows the token prices, when spot reopens, and what recent weekends looked like.

Why gold has a weekend price at all
The benchmarks for gold — London spot and COMEX futures in New York — do not trade at the weekend. While they are shut, a price board can only repeat Friday's close.
Two markets carry on. Tokenized gold trades around the clock on crypto exchanges and on-chain: one XAUT (Tether Gold) or one PAXG (Pax Gold) is a claim on one troy ounce in a vault, so its price is the market's live view of gold. And since 24 July 2026, CME's 1-Ounce Gold futures trade 24/7 with a weekly maintenance window of at least two hours; nearly 15,000 contracts, about $60 million notional, traded on the first weekend. The benchmark GC contract still closes.
Neither is the official price. A weekend price is what buyers and sellers will pay right now, in thin markets. Treat it as a reading of sentiment: if big news breaks after Friday's close, the token price moves first; spot may or may not follow when it reopens.

Before you act on a weekend price
- Liquidity is thin. Fewer traders at the weekend means wider spreads, and a large order moves the price.
- The token has its own premium or discount. XAUT and PAXG drift a few tenths of a percent from spot on ordinary days, and that drift is inside every weekend reading.
- Monday may not follow. Spot opens where dealers price it on Sunday evening, which can differ from the weekend token price.
- Costs are separate. Swapping into XAUT costs a fee, slippage and network gas, usually more than the gap to spot.

What are gold market hours?
Spot gold and COMEX gold futures trade from Sunday 18:00 to Friday 17:00 New York time, with a one-hour break from 17:00 to 18:00 on each weekday. In UTC that is Sunday 22:00 to Friday 21:00 during US daylight saving, and an hour later after 1 November 2026. Exchange holidays shorten some sessions.
Does the weekend price tell you where gold opens on Monday?
Not reliably. It is what token holders pay in thin weekend trading, mixed with the token's own small premium or discount. Over the 6 weekends recorded here, the implied weekend move ranged from −0.33% to +0.44%. We have not measured how well it predicts Monday's open, so read it as sentiment, not a forecast.
Why does XAUT trade below spot even on weekdays?
The token has its own market: exchange order books, on-chain liquidity and the cost of creating or redeeming tokens. That keeps it within a fraction of a percent of spot, in either direction; the latest weekday median for XAUT was −0.32%. Compare weekend readings with that level, not with zero.
Can I buy gold on a weekend?
Yes, as tokenized gold: XAUT and PAXG can be bought with USDT on exchanges or swapped in a wallet at any hour. Futures traders can use CME's 1-Ounce Gold contract. Expect wider spreads than on a weekday, and check swap fees, slippage and network gas before the price.

At 18:00 New York time. That is 23:00 UTC after US daylight saving ended on 1 November 2026, and 22:00 UTC during daylight saving. The status panel on this page converts it to your own time zone.

On the latest weekday medians, XAUT was −0.32% and PAXG −0.01% against spot. Both usually sit within a few tenths of a percent of spot, which is less than a typical exchange spread, so the gap should not decide which one you buy.

Token prices from CoinGecko and spot gold from gold-api.com are fetched in the same run every four hours; if the two are more than 15 minutes apart, no premium is published. While spot is shut gold-api.com returns Friday's close, so weekend readings are labelled "vs Friday's close", not a premium. Whether spot is open is computed from New York time (Sunday 18:00 to Friday 17:00, closed 17:00–18:00 on weekdays); holidays are not modelled.
